Early nineteenth century travelers to Turkey, John Cam Hobhouse and Lord Byron, were shocked by the rampant boy prostitution. On May 17th, 1810, Hobhouse reports that "Hearing music, [I] went into a room like a hall with a gallery all round it. This was a wine-house and here I saw a boy dancing in a style indescribably beastly, scarcely moving from one place, but making a thousand lascivious motions with his thighs, loins, and belly." Two days later he brought Byron to see it.
